The Technical Artist acts as a bridge between the artists and programmers, ensuring the art content and features are easily integrated into the game while respecting the artistic vision and technical constraints. Your role is to support the content production art teams in achieving top-quality results within the project context. You will work closely with the Technical Directors and the programming team to implement technical art features and new technologies in the project.

What an Environment Technical Artist will do:

  • Implement optimizations and monitor the performance of the game
  • Identify and Implement art-pipeline optimizations and automatizations
  • Integrate technical art features with the help of the programming team
  • Offer technical support to the art team in day-by-day production issues
  • Create and maintain technical documentation
  • Share with the other artists best-practices and new tools

If you’re interested, you’ll need these skills or experiences:

  • Minimum three years experience in a digital art content creation pipeline, ideally in the video game industry + 1 shipped AA title or higher (should be able to provide specific and direct anecdotes to what they contributed to optimization efforts and workflows)
  • Understand the digital art content creation pipeline (high and low-poly modelling, unwrapping, baking, texturing, level art)
  • Ability to create artist-friendly technical documentation
  • Knowledge and Interest in the following tech-art areas:
    • Experience with Unreal
    • Understanding of automated world-building techniques
    • Perform in-depth profiling of game performance in levels
    • Understand industry standards when it comes to making high-performance, beautiful environments.
    • Scripting (Python) and or tool development
    • Understanding of optimization and how to best balance triangle/texture/shader/draw call budgets
    • Material knowledge
    • Support artists with workflow improvements and issues

Additional skills or experiences that will move you up in the stack-ranking for considerations are:

  • Experience using the following software Houdini, Substance Suite and Blender
  • Knowledge or experience in C++
  • Working knowledge of level design or an environment art background
  • Interest or knowledge of destruction systems
  • Console development experience
  • History of communication and training for other artists
